Why Faro? A Painter’s Journey
Faro is a city of quiet beauty, golden light, and slow-moving tides. While many travelers rush through on their way to other Algarve destinations, I stay.
I walk its historic streets, watch the shifting reflections of the Ria Formosa, and capture these fleeting moments in paint.

A modernist building bathed in warm late-afternoon light. The deep, irregular shadow of a tree stretches across the facade, creating a fleeting interplay between architecture and nature.

A palette featuring a soft blend of yellow and white acrylic paints, showcasing the smooth transition of colors.
How I painted en plein-air
It all depended on the atmosphere. The quality of light—and therefore the shadows!—in Faro is stunning, and I always tried to capture these strong contrasts. Although I value sketching before picking up my brushes and mixing paints, I often jumped straight in as soon as my composition was established. I’m an impatient painter (just as I am in life), so to work faster, I pre-mixed my colors—somewhat contradictorily using a retarder to keep the paint from drying too quickly!

Beyond Faro, on Ria Formosa: My next series explores the essence of the sea in abstract form.
